Bellary Corporation to collect Rs. 100 from ore-laden lorries

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, DEC. 30. The general body of the Bellary Municipal Corporation, at its emergency meeting here on Thursday, decided to collect Rs. 100 each from iron ore laden lorries passing through the city.

A proposal was forwarded to the State Government seeking its approval in this regard.

G. Somashekar Reddy, mayor, presided over the meeting.

Members of the corporation felt that the collection was necessary in view of the damage caused by the lorries to the roads, environment, and citizens' health.

As per the suggestion made by Congress members, Venkatarao, president of the Lorry Owners' Association, Humayun, and Mohammed Ghouse, the meeting decided to collect the money from mine owners and not from lorry owners.

With regard to granting permission to the Bellary Agenda Task Force (BATF) to relocate the clock tower at the Gadagi Chennappa Circle, the meeting decided to withhold a decision in the matter. The meeting also decided to ascertain the opinion of the Allum family, which had constructed the tower, in this regard.

The meeting decided to pressure the Union and State Governments for taking up the construction of the railway over and under bridges in the city to ease the movement of vehicular traffic.

The meeting also approved the plan to take up various development works at an estimated cost of Rs. 53 lakhs.

B. Sriramulu, MLA, participated in the meeting.
