PANAJI, DEC. 30. An exhibition of traditional crafts of the on people from the North East began here on Thursday. Some of the exquisite works from the region are on display. The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. has organised the fair. The Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Vishwas Satarkar inaugurated the exhibition that will be open to public from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. till January 16 at the Kala Academy. The exhibition features cane and bamboo crafts, handloom weaving, artistic textile weaving, wood carving, embroidery, jewellery, brass and bell metal, basketry and so on. D.C. Borkotoky, Deputy General Manager of the corporation, told presspersons that the exhibits include products from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalay, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. He said such exhibitions are organised to bring to light the rare talent of people from the North East.
Employment potential
Handicrafts and handlooms sector in the North East provides employment to 38 lakh people, a majority of them being tribal folk. He said product development and widening the market base have given a new vision and hope to the practicing craftsmen and weavers. Over 35 craftsmen and weavers are participating in the exhibition, Mr. Borkotoky said and added that live demonstration of handicraft has been organised.
