Traders, businessmen donate to relief fund

A fruit vendor donates for tsunami relief fund when the Deputy Commissioner, S.N. Jayaram (sporting a cap), took a `padayatra' in Bellary on Thursday.

BELLARY, DEC. 30. The Deputy Commissioner, S.N. Jayaram, collected a sum of Rs. 1.6 lakh during the "padayatra" here on Thursday. The "padayatra" was organised to raise funds for the tsunami victims. Phanindra Babu and Chandrashekar Choudhary, president and secretary of the Bellary District Chamber of Commerce and Industry respectively, handed over a demand draft for Rs. 51,000 at the Gadagi Chennappa Circle to the Deputy Commissioner. Traders and owners of several shops and business establishments also made donations to the relief fund.

The Bellary Agenda Task Force (BATF), headed by the Deputy Commissioner, has announced a donation of Rs. 10 lakhs.

N. Suryanarayan Reddy, Kurgodu MLA has announced a donation of Rs. 25,000 for the relief fund. Another donor, who did not wish to disclose his name, gave a demand draft for Rs. 25,000 and promised to donate another Rs. 10,000.

Zahir Ahmed, chairman of the Bellary Urban Development Authority, has announced to donate his one-month's honorarium (Rs. 10,000) to the relief fund. The Terapanth Samaj made a donation of Rs. 11,000 on Wednesday.

The corporators of the Bellary Municipal Corporation have announced to donate their one-month's salary, while the civic employees have decided to donate a day's salary. The Tungabadhra Grameena Bank employees also have decided to donate a day's salary for the relief fund. B. Sriramulu, MLA; Chandrashekar, president of the district unit of State Government Employees' Association; Bheemappa, Assistant Commissioner; Mahipal, and Narayana Rao, participated in the "paada yatra."
