HYDERABAD, DEC 30. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday appealed to the medical fraternity of Gandhi Medical College (GMC) and hospital to contribute their mite, both in monetary and medical form, to people in regions devastated by tsunamis. Inaugurating the International Continuing Medical Education programme at GMC as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the college, Dr. Reddy said medical teams could be formed and sent not just to affected areas in Andhra Pradesh, but to Tamil Nadu, the Andamans, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and all other places where the tsunamis had rendered people homeless and where there was a danger of epidemics. Commenting on the Alumni Education Centre which is nearing completion at the college, Dr. Reddy said it was necessary for doctors to be abreast of the latest advances in the medical sector just as it was important for research to be encouraged. The Government was ready to chip in with 50 per cent of the cost, if any developmental activity was to be taken up for the college or hospital, provided that the alumni provided the rest. "And the sky is the limit," he added.
The issues
The programme, which has around 400 GMC alumni, both from India and abroad, apart from the existing faculty and students of the college as participants, will deliberate on a comprehensive range of contemporary issues in clinical practice over the next two days. Experts and alumni of the college from the United States, the United Kingdom, UAE and India are the moderators and speakers for issues that include topics of special interest like medical education in the US, childhood cancer, cardiology, pain management, metabolic diseases relevant to India, infectious diseases, ageing, mental health and women's health, among others. The Ministers J. Geeta Reddy and G. Vijayarama Rao, both of whom are GMC alumni, the Alumni Association president, D Raja Reddy, the GMC principal, G. Kishore Roy, the Gandhi Hospital superintendent, A.Y. Chary, and the Alumni Association ad hoc committee chairman (USA), Sudhaker Rao, were present.
