Over-age issue: four teams scratched

KOLKATA, DEC. 30. In an unprecedented incident four teams — Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh — were scratched from the knock-out stage of the under-15 cricket for Polly Umrigar Trophy after some players from these teams were found over-aged.

According to BCCI sources, the teams that participated in the quarterfinals filed protests and counter-protests.

Working on the protests, the board had the players medically examined and doctors, determining mainly from the bone development, found multiple cases of age infringements in all the four teams.

The board, going by the medical reports, scratched the teams.

While U.P. and Gujarat had already lost their matches, AP and Orissa lost their chances of appearing in the semifinals scheduled to start on Friday.

In such a situation, Tamil Nadu and Delhi, the other two semifinalists against whom there were no protests, will play the final.

The final, scheduled on January 5, is likely to be brought forward. — Our Sports Reporter
