By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 30. The External Affairs Minister, Natwar Singh, along with the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today saw off the first batch of 282 Haj pilgrims from the special terminal at Indira Gandhi International Airport here.

The Delhi Development Minister, Raj Kumar Chauhan, the Chairman of the Central Haj Committee, Tanveer Ahmad, and the Chairman of the Delhi State Haj Committee, A.S. Salmani, were also present on the occasion.

In all, about 49 flights carrying 12, 500 pilgrims will take off from the Capital for Jeddah till January 15.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Singh said the Central Government had restored the Haj subsidy removed by the earlier Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance and had also increased the quota from 72, 000 pilgrims to 82,000.

Ms. Dikshit informed that the Delhi Government was providing a subsidy of Rs.50 lakhs to the Delhi State Haj Committee.

Both leaders asked the departing pilgrims to pray for well-being of thousands of fellow-countrymen in South India who had suffered in the wake of the disaster caused by the tsunami waves.
