ANANTAPUR, DEC. 30. The Agriculture Department has decided to initiate legal action against a seed dealer at Uravakonda in the district for allegedly cheating farmers of the area by selling spurious chilli seed in the brand name of a seed company. Farmers who had taken up chilli cultivation in 147 acres had suffered heavily with no production. Obulesu of Farmvision Agrotech had allegedly sold spurious chilli seed in the brand name of FI-Kaddi variety, which was originally sold by Cenzenta India Limited. The dealer assured the farmers that the variety would give a yield of about 30 quintals per acre. As the crop did not give any yield, the farmers complained to the Agriculture Department. The crop was then referred to the agricultural scientists by the department and was proved that the seed did not belong to the variety or company claimed by the dealer. The Joint Director of Agriculture, P. Pothaiah, today told newspersons that the farmers who had suffered loss may not get any compensation.
