Cuddalore
By Our Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE, DEC. 30. Following a warning from the Centre that a tsunami may hit the coasts again today, the police under the instruction of the Inspector-General of Police (north zone), S.R.Jangid, shifted people to safer places in Cuddalore district. The mobile patrol was asked to announce over the public address system the impending threat and people were advised to move to safer places. The residents, who are yet to get over the shock of the first attack, readily shifted to other areas. Bus service to coastal areas was cancelled and all buses ran with full complement till late in the afternoon. The tension was quite palpable and people gathered in groups on the arterial roads to mull over the destructive trail of tsunami.
Toll 572
The police said the toll in Cuddalore had gone up to 572, with six bodies unearthed today two each at Killai, M.G.R.Thittu and Cuddalore. Thirtytwo persons were said to be missing, and eight bodies were lying unclaimed in Annamalai Nagar hospital. To identify the victims, police personnel were carrying photographs of the unclaimed bodies to all relief camps. Earlier, the IG along with the DIG and the SP, ventured into the sea for half kilometre by a steamer in search operation for missing persons.
