Western Railways triumphs

MUMBAI, DEC. 30 . Western Railway fought off a spirited challenge from star-studded Indian Oil Corporation, winning 2-1 in the decider to retain the super division title of the Bombay Hockey Association league at the Mahindra stadium. Harish Timori put W. Rly. ahead in the 39th minute as Western enjoyed ball possession in the first-half. The two sides had clashed in the league where the railway team was stunned 0-5.

Olympian Deepak Thakur put IOC on the board, scoring off an indirect penalty corner variation after a hit by Bikramjit Singh. Amarjit Singh struck the match-winner for the railwaymen, whose decision to employ six new players paid off. IOC, almost at full strength with current internationals Devesh Chauhan, Viren Rasquinha and Olympian Prabhjot Singh playing, attacked in vain. The winner got Rs. 31,000, the runner-up Rs. 20,000.
