Mahila Congress to help victims

HYDERABAD: A 15-member Andhra Pradesh Mahila Congress team is leaving for the tsunami- affected areas to distribute relief material among the victims.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary and in-charge for Andhra Pradesh, Janaki Savant, said the team carrying the relief material would tour West Godavari, Krishna, Prakasam and Nellore districts during the next two three days.

Clothes, utensils and blankets collected through contributions would be distributed to the affected people. A report would be submitted to the All-India Mahila Congress by the State unit.

CPI(M) leader's plea to YSR

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to take the necessary steps to secure information about the fate of the people from coastal Andhra living in Andaman and Nicobar islands.

The CPI (M) secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, in a letter written to the Chief Minister has said over 25,000 people from the State are living in the islands. Panic has gripped relatives of these people in wake of the quake and tsunami, he has said.

He has urged the Government to set up a cell in the Relief Commissioner's office and control rooms in coastal districts to monitor the situation and gather information.

Honour for scientist

NELLORE: A. Jagdeesh, well-known energy scientist and convenor of Nayudamma Centre for Development Alternatives, here, has been chosen for the silver jubilee Samaikya Bharath Gaurav Satkar--2005 by the Madras Telugu Academy.

It will be presented at a function at the Music Academy Auditorium on April 3, 2005.

Dr. Jagdeesh is a resource person in renewable energy to many organisations and published more than 110 research papers. He received 13 international and national awards for his contribution to the field of renewable energy.

Call for consumer awareness

HYDERABAD: The Civil Supplies Minister, G. Vijayarama Rao, has stressed the need for strengthening vigilance committees and educating the public to curb exploitation of consumers by traders.

Speaking at a workshop on `Crusade against adulteration, counterfeiting and spurious products' organised by the Civil Supplies Department here on Thursday, he said consumers were getting cheated due to lack of awareness on their rights.

Consumers also do not bother to check the quality and price of a product before buying it, he added.

The Commissioner Civil Supplies, Bhanwarlal, said that a forum for redressal of consumers' problems was launched recently and it would meet every Saturday.

The Minister later released a poster on adulteration of food products brought out by the department.

YSR releases revenue diary

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday released the revenue diary-cum-handbook of 2005 brought out by the Andhra Pradesh Revenue Services Association.

The diary contains all the relevant Acts and rules useful in day-to-day administration of all revenue employees.

The association president, K. Laxmaiah, general secretary, N. Anand Rao, and others were present.

Pratibha scholarships sought

Hyderabad: The BITS Pilani Goa campus Andhra Pradesh Parents' Association have urged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to grant Pratibha scholarships to students of the Goa campus on par with other national-level institutions.

A delegation of the association, led by its president, R.V. Rao, and the secretary, K.V. Rao, called on the Chief Minister on Thursday and thanked him for enabling admission of about 600 students to the BITS Pilani.

They requested him to extend the Pratibha scholarships to the Goa campus also as it was a part of the BITS Pilani, Rajasthan.

The applications sent by the Goa campus were referred to the principal secretary, Higher Education, seeking orders whether these students were also eligible for the scholarships, the delegation said.

Grant for school staff arrears

HYDERABAD: The Government has released Rs. 21.61 crores and Rs. 4.28 crores to clear the arrears of the part-time contingency staff working in mandal parishad and ZP schools respectively, according to the State Teachers Union.

Farmer ends life

NIZAMABAD: A farmer, Tagirancha Deva Reddy (40) of Faridpet in Machareddy mandal, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his residence last night. He is survived by wife and two daughters.

Ragging case against 2 students

Sangareddy: The Sangareddy police have registered cases against the Principal of the Sangareddy-based D.V.R College of Engineering and Technology and two students under the Andhra Pradesh Ragging (Prohibition) Act.

The police initiated action after receiving a complaint from a first year B.Tech student, Parthsarathi, a native of Srikakulam district.

Two-second year students--Mahesh and Raghu--have been allegedly harassing Parthsarathi since the beginning of the classes. As the ragging by the duo along with few more seniors became unbearable, Parthasarathi complained to the principal, Laxmipathi.

Encouraged by the inaction of the college management, the seniors forced Parthasarathi to shave his moustache and forced him to undress on Thursday.

He ran away and lodged a complaint at the police station.

Some of the D.V.R students had earlier gone on the rampage at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad.

Dies in mishap

CUDDAPAH: A washerman, Pottipati Veeranjaneyulu (20), died and two others were hurt when a tractor-trolley overturned near Mabbuchintalapalle crossroads in Vemula mandal on Wednesday. Veeranjaneyulu of Udavagandla village in Thondur mandal was killed instantaneously. Obulaiah and Bogathamma sustained injuries and were admitted to Pulivendula Government Hospital.

Boy suffers burns

CUDDAPAH: A 14-year-old boy, Shaik Hussain Peera, suffered burn injuries in a tyre-making unit in Chinna Chowk near here on Thursday. His clothes caught fire when he burnt a garbage heap after sweeping the premises.

Illegal notice

ANANTAPUR: The District Cooperative Officer, M. Surender, on Thursday stated that an employment opportunities notice issued by

the Anantapur Cooperative Town Bank on December 28 and published in a regional Telugu daily for filling of vacancies was illegal as per the Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Societies Act and was invalid. He requested the people, particularly the unemployed youth, not to respond to the announcement and suffer any kind of loss.

NELLORE: ICFAI National College, Nellore, has conducted a quiz programme on Thursday for Degree College students, in which participants from 16 colleges took part. The Principal, B. Rajendra Singh, spoke. The Chief Manager, State Bank of India, Nellore, P.R. Patro, gave away the prizes.

Haystacks destroyed

CUDDAPAH: Three haystacks belonging to a Congressman, Narreddy Bhaskar Reddy, prime accused in TDP leader, C. Veeranjaneyulu's murder, were burnt in Kothur village of Pendlimarry mandal late last night. Meanwhile, the police seized the Tata Sierra car of a Congressman from an automobile shed here on Thursday. The Kurnool inspector, Rajasekhar and local policemen seized the vehicle and took into custody the shed owner, Basha, for questioning.

CUDDAPAH: Contractual electricity workers of Renigunta sub-station on Thursday staged a demonstration at the 220 kv sub-station here on Thursday, demanding salary arrears. The Chief Engineer of Transmission Lines and Sub-Stations, Prahladudu, promised to take a decision on their demands in the board meeting.

CUDDAPAH: The principal of Helen Keller's High School for the Deaf, P. Dowlath Khan, was chosen for `Jewel of India' award.
