NAGAPATTINAM, DEC. 30. Even as Nagapattinam district, the worst hit in Sunday's tsunami strike, is witnessing a massive inflow of humanitarian assistance, a large quantity of used clothes brought in by relief agencies is going waste. Some aid agencies have appealed to voluntary organisations not to send in used clothes any longer but the clothes continue to be sent. Hundreds of bales of used clothes are lying discarded in government offices and on roads, especially on the Vedaranyam-Nagapattinam stretch. A huge pile of used clothes had accumulated in front of the Tiruvarur Collectorate. Some women members of voluntary organisations have expressed displeasure at the relief material, collected with a great deal of effort, going waste. Social workers say it is essential for aid agencies to get in touch with the district authorities to ascertain what form of help was needed, before rushing in relief material.
