Fresh threat takes people by surprise

By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, DEC. 30. Panic gripped coastal areas of the district today following the evacuation of people from the area at around noon in response to a warning of a fresh tsunami onslaught in the State.

People were alarmed when the official machinery initiated efforts to evacuate them following the announcement of the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram.

Fisheries, Revenue and police officials made announcements on the microphone after the office of the District Collector here received a message at 11.20 a.m. from the Government warning of rising water levels.

According to reports, nearly 50 families in Ayikkara were moved to nearby camps. At Thalassery, patients at the Government Hospital were shifted to Public Health Centres at Koothuparamba, Pinarayi and Panur. Several families in the coastal areas near Thalassery were moved to eight relief camps.

The panic affected the functioning of some banks and parallel colleges in the town.

In nearby Mahe, officials took various precautions in view of the warning, though the people were not evacuated.

The Fisheries officials here said that all fishermen who had ventured out to the sea had returned after they were told of the warning over mobile phones.

The officials said that the water level had not shown any marked increase over the last few hours.
