No sign of epidemic in relief camps: official

CHENNAI, DEC. 30. The Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, S.P. Agarwal, today said that there were no indication of epidemic in the relief camps set up all over the State.

Speaking to presspersons here, Dr. Agarwal said the Centre, with was working closely with the State Governments in Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was on the lookout for early signs of an epidemic.

However, there was no such indication of an epidemic of water-borne diseases so far, he said.

About 70 experts in various medical specialities were sent to the different coastal States that have been affected to supplement the efforts of the States. These doctors have treated at least 15,000 patients all over Tamil Nadu for minor injuries, eye injuries and respiratory tract infections. About Rs. 40 lakhs in medical supplies had been despatched to the relief camps.

Teams of psychiatrists from NIMHANS, Bangalore, are on call to render psychiatric assistance and counselling to the victims of the tragedy. All the teams will be on the field for as long as required, Dr. Agarwal added.
