MUMBAI, DEC. 30. With six more deaths, the hooch toll in Mumbai reached 77. Twentyone of the 127 admitted to the city hospitals were reported critical. Police continued to raid illicit liquor dens and arrest those involved in distilling, transporting and selling the killer brew. The toll will be 98 if another hooch tragedy that had claimed 21 lives a few days ago is taken into account. The police have so far arrested 28 persons from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane cities and charged three of them, including two women, for culpable homicide. They have been remanded to police custody. In raids on various dens here and in other towns of the State, the police have seized about 25,000 litres of illicit liquor. The victims had taken the hooch at Vikhroli last Monday. The Maharashtra Government has suspended over a score of police and excise officers and ordered a CID inquiry. State Government sources said methanol, which is widely used in adulterating liquor, is going to be put on the list of dangerous chemicals. The State Excise department has announced a prize of Rs. 5,000 to anyone giving information about such dens.
