Epidemic outbreak on Kollam coast

KOLLAM, DEC. 30. The District Collector, B. Sreenivas, today directed hotels and restaurants in the district to take extreme care on the hygiene front. The direction comes in the wake of an epidemic outbreak in coastal areas.

As many as 348 persons from the coastal areas are under treatment in various hospitals. Among them, the condition of nine persons is reported serious. They have been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Forty persons are admitted to the district hospital here and the rest to the Karunagapally taluk hospital. The Collector said the number of those killed in Sunday's tsunami onslaught on the district stood at 130. A preliminary report prepared by the district authorities shows that 1,254 persons were injured by the seismic waves, 1,559 houses completely washed away and 926 houses partially damaged.

Computation of the loss is progressing. Among those killed, 128 are from the Alapad village of Karunagapally taluk and the rest from Shakthikulangara and Kollam West in Kollam taluk.

The Collector said that 43 relief camps had been opened in the district.
