BHOPAL, DEC. 30. Over 50 tonnes of relief material, including medicines, foodgrains, clothes and other essential items, donated by citizens and various traders' organisations was lying at Bhopal airport this evening for being airlifted to the coastal States devastated by tsunami waves this past Sunday.

The Madhya Pradesh Governor, Balram Jakhar, today offered to donate Rs. 1 lakh from his personal account for the tsunami victims. Earlier on Tuesday, the State Chief Minister, Babulal Gaur, and members of the State Council of Ministers had pledged their one-month salary for the victims' cause.

The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has appealed to the citizens, various organizations and government employees to donate generously for providing succour and help to rebuild the lives of the survivors of the tsunami.

The State Government has sanctioned Rs. 2 crore for the tsunami victims and is continuously coordinating with the affected coastal States to give momentum to its own relief initiative, a State Government spokesman told The Hindu this afternoon. The official spokesman went on to inform that the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has asked the State Government to send relief material. The relief material was being collected in the State by Red Cross for being air-lifted to Port Blair. Necessary drugs, including anti-biotics and ORS packets, were also being collected for being sent to Tamil Nadu.

The Bhopal Chemists' Association has come forward and joined the medical colleges in collecting medicines for tsunami relief. Similarly, the Bhopal Tea Merchants' Association and Traders' Association have also pooled in their resources extending relief to the tsunami victims.
