Nagercoil
By P.S.Suresh Kumar
NAGERCOIL, DEC. 30. The people in the coastal areas of Kanyakumari district got panicky after the red alert sounded by the police and the fire service personnel that killer waves might hit the State once again. The district administration asked the people residing in low-lying areas to safer places through public address system. The Health Minister, N.Thalavai Sundaram, made arrangements to shift people living in the low-lying areas to places farther from the sea. Rescue teams were asked to monitor the situation round the clock. The sky also remained overcast throughout the day. Meanwhile, the Society for Law, Justice and Development is to organise a seismic tidal wave disaster management meeting on January 1 at Jasetha Mahal in Nagercoil. Speaking to The Hindu , the secretary of the forum, Edwin Alexander, has urged the non-voluntary organisations to attend the meeting to review the situation. This was mainly an attempt to streamline the combined efforts in order to avoid duplication of valuable services rendered by all. A consolidated un-biased, objective assessment and report would strengthen the efforts of the Government in planning various things such as disaster response, rehabilitation, restoration of normal life, capacity building and preparedness for future, said Mr. Edwin
