MANGALORE, DEC. 30. The Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Oscar Fernandes, on Thursday urged industrialists dealing with cashew nut to look into the problems of farmers growing cashew nut and workers in cashew nut units. He was addressing a gathering after launching the golden jubilee celebrations of Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association (formerly Mangalore Cashew Manufacturers' Association) here. The Union Minister said that owners of cashew nut processing units should help farmers contain stem borer disease in cashew plantations. Cashew industry should understand the problems of growers and meet their needs to increase production. Similarly, the industrialists should also attend to the problems of workers in their factories since they contributed a lot in the production. Mr. Fernandes said at present the focus is on marketing cashew kernels. But cashew shells and its fruit could be utilised for other purposes. Oil could be extracted from cashew shells and the same could be applied to furniture and some other purposes. Marketing of cashew shells and fruits should be explored. The Union Minister urged cashew manufacturers to produce a brand with cholesterol-free cashew nuts and market the same. Besides nuts should be made available in mini packets in small numbers such as 10 or 20 nuts. Quality is the main component in packaging. Such endeavours will help attract market. He said there was good demand for cashew nut in North India. The manufacturers should tap this market to the maximum extent. Kalbavi Prakash Rao, association president, donated Rs. one lakh from the association to Mr. Fernandes for Chief Minister's Relief Fund for tsunami relief work. Blasius D'Souza, MLC; N. Yogish Bhat, MLA; A. Srinivasa Rao, president of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and Bola Rahul Kamath, secretary of the association, were present.
