Udupi
By Our Staff Correspondent
UDUPI, DEC. 30. The former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda said on Thursday that the verdict of the 2004 Assembly elections went against the communal forces. This made him join hands with the Congress to form a secular Government in the State. Mr. Deve Gowda was addressing a meeting of office-bearers of the Janata Dal (Secular) district unit here. He said he had told the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, not to interfere in the working of the Janata Dal (S) Ministers in the coalition Government. The Janata Dal (S) Legislature Party is the forum that will assess the performance of the ministers. Just because the Janata Dal (S) shared power did not mean it will be complacent. He was touring the State to keep the party machinery well organised. Unlike some parties, which had to go to New Delhi to get clearance, his party did not have to do it. Its leadership was in Bangalore. The party had a collective leadership. He, the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddharamaiah, the Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash, the Large and Medium Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, and the President of the party State unit, N. Thippanna, met and decided on issues confronting the State and the party. It is wrong to mix religion with politics. Now that the coalition Government is in place, the activities of the Bajrang Dal will be curbed. The coalition Government has opened a new chapter in State politics. The Janata Dal (S) did not want to enjoy power. It wants to provide basic necessities to the people. There are many hospitals without doctors. The portfolio of Medical Education was with his party. He has asked the Medical Education Minister to take action within a month. The people of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts felt they had to choose between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as they perceived the Janata Dal (S) to be weak. Mr. Thippanna, Mahima Patel, general secretary of the State unit of the party; and party leaders Amarnath Shetty and Subbaiah Shetty were present.
