MANGALORE, DEC. 30. The devastation of coastline in Tamil Nadu and Kerala in tsunami has left fishermen of Mangalore taluk in a state of shock. The warning from the Union Home Ministry has shaken the fishermen at Meenakali in Baikampady area. When The Hindu met Dinesh Puthran, a fisherman, he said: "All these years we have seen worst floods during the monsoons and a rough sea but the scenes on television have unnerved our community." Mr. Puthran and his colleagues have hired a truck to evacuate some members of their community. Groups at Thanneerbavi and Sasihitlu too have made similar arrangements, according to Suratkal MLA, J. Krishna Palemar. The Chief Whip of the Government, Abhayachandra Jain, who was touring some coastal areas in Mulky hobli said it was important to be prepared for evacuation. Evacuees arrive: It was a different tale at Rosario High School Hall. The evacuees from Bengre were arriving in groups. The Mayor, Purandaradasa Kulur, who was present there along with corporators Diwakar (former Mayor) and Naveen D' Souza, was supervising the accommodation of evacuees. The Mayor told The Hindu that he was certain that there were more evacuees and had made arrangements with the Yathim Khana and Casica High School in Jeppu and couple of other places in Kulur.
