CHENNAI, DEC. 30. The City Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, today warned non-governmental organisations and voluntary agencies against directly distributing relief materials to tsunami victims in the city. Direct distribution of relief material by the NGOs led to law and order problems on Wednesday, the Commissioner said. Relief materials should be handed over to the nearest Corporation zonal offices. They could be distributed with the help of civic or police officials in the 18 relief centres, or at the Collectorate. Serious action would be initiated against violators, Mr. Nataraj said.
Cleaning starts
Explaining the on-going relief measures, Mr. Nataraj said the Corporation officials had started cleaning Srinivasapuram and the coastline. Disinfectants were sprayed in fishing kuppams. There were no reports of epidemics spreading, he said.
Property recovered
Thirteen sovereigns of stolen jewellery, cars and motorcycles worth Rs. 7 lakhs and Rs. 34,500 in cash were recovered by the police and restored to the owners on Thursday. Last week, a special party arrested Aslam of Ambattur, Jayakumar of Anna Nagar and Jeevanandhan of Saligramam. Interrogation revealed that they stole three cars in Hosur and a car and a motorcycle in Triplicane. The police recovered the vehicles worth Rs. 3 lakhs stolen from Triplicane. The arrested were remanded to judicial custody.
