KANCHEEPURAM, DEC. 30. The Municipal Council today observed a two-minute silence to mourn the death of thousands of people across South and South-East Asia in Sunday's tsunami strike. The Council, which met under the Chairmanship of K.Arumugam, passed a resolution to donate Rs.2 lakhs from its General Fund for relief works. The councillors have also decided to contribute today's sitting fees and the municipal staff a day's salary to the relief fund. It was decided to hand over the amount to the District Collector. Mr. Arumugam said safe drinking water and sanitation facilities had been provided for the victims accommodated at the Annai Anjugam Kalyana Mandapam here. Also, a water-tanker has been sent to Cuddalore district for relief operations. The SRM group of institutions at Kattankulathur has sent five ambulances and a 10-member medical team to the affected areas. The group's buses have been engaged to shift affected people to safer places. Food packets, prepared at a SRM group hotel, were being distributed twice a day to the residents of relief centres in the Thirukazhukundram area since December 27, the group chairman, T.R. Pachamuthu, said.
Relief materials
The Finance Minister, C. Ponnaiyan, and the Handlooms Minister, V. Somasundaram, today distributed relief material to several affected families. About 1,000 families were each given 60 kg of rice, a dhoti, a saree, two bed-sheets and Rs. 4,000 in cash at Oyallikuppam and Pudupattinamkuppam near Kalpakkam, according to R. Venkatesan, Collector. Similarly, the Tiruvallur District Administration has made arrangements for disbursement of relief articles to the affected families.
