COIMBATORE, DEC. 30 . The Opposition in the Coimbatore Corporation, functioning under the umbrella of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), was handed a 5-1 defeat in the bypolls today for vacant posts of members in the Council standing committees. The DMK, MDMK, Congress and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) decided not to field candidates to facilitate a win for their DPA partners: CPI and CPI(M). However, the leader of the Congress, `Colony' R. Venkatachalam, contested for the membership in the Works Committee. His party colleagues demanded that his candidature be treated as that of an Independent. The winners: Education Committee-K. Geetha (BJP), Health Committee-K. Sampath Kumar (Ind), Finance and Taxation Committee- S.M. Marudachalam (CPI), Works Committee (for two posts)-S. Jayaraman (AIADMK) and A. Marudachalam (Ind). In a tie for the post in the Town Planning Committee, between S. Balasubramani, Independent on AIADMK's side and K. Arumugham, Independent supported by the DPA (36 votes each), Mr. Balasubramani was declared winner by draw of lots.
