MADURAI, DEC. 30. The first meeting of the newly formed Telephone Advisory Committee held at a hotel here ended in a scuffle among the members belonging to rival Dravidian parties, who hurled chairs and glass tumblers at one another. One of them sustained head injuries in the melee. One of the members, who was a witness to the pandemonium, said that the problem was sparked off when a member, belonging to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), complained that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited officials were not heeding his long-pending demand for providing landline in a particular area in Theni district. "Even the appeal made to the Union Minister for Communication has fallen on deaf ears," he said. The AIADMK members also objected to a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam member making a `political speech' at the meeting. The DMK member had expressed his gratitude to the Union Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief, M. Karunanidhi, and the party deputy general secretary, M. K. Stalin, for making him the advisory panel member. This led to hurling of chairs bringing the meeting to an abrupt end. Flower pots and glass tumblers were also hurled at one another, in the presence of the BSNL officials, including the General Manager, M.K. Sudarsanam. The injured was admitted to a private hospital. The Tallakulam police have registered a case.
