Madurai
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, DEC. 30. Panic-stricken residents of Race Course Colony and neighbouring areas here raised an alarm when waste chemicals dumped in a private land caught fire producing a thick smoke this morning. Three fire tenders fought for nearly an hour to put out the flames. When the labourers employed on the site tried to set waste timbers on fire, it spread to the chemical dump. Fanned by a strong breeze, the spiralling smoke that was visible from far off places, such as Mattuthavani integrated bus stand, created a flutter. The office of Fire and Rescue Services was flooded with scores of phone calls. Many thatch-roofed houses were saved by the timely action of the fire service personnel. However, four trees also caught fire. Officials from police, Department of Revenue and Madurai Corporation and scores of passers-by rushed to the spot. Nearly a hundred fully-grown trees were seen felled on the site.
