Madurai
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, DEC. 30. The Madurai Division of the Southern Railway has sounded an alert in the coastal destinations along the Madurai-Rameswaram and Madurai-Tuticorin sections today. Following a tsunami alert this morning, the operation of some trains was delayed or regulated. A few trains on the Tiruchi-Manamadurai stretch were terminated at stations ahead of Rameswaram as a precautionary measure. "We are coordinating with the State Government. Though normal operation of trains and railway functions have resumed in these coastal stations, the officials have been advised to keep in touch with the local authorities for tsunami warnings," the Divisional Railway Manager, B.N. Rajasekhar, said here this evening. Meanwhile, hundreds of passengers with reserved accommodation fled the originating stations of Tuticorin and Rameswaram and boarded trains en route. A team of senior railway officials are closely monitoring the situation. Patrolling teams are keeping watch of the Pamban railway bridge across sea between Mandapam and Rameswaram, according to official sources.
