Children pay homage

MADURAI, DEC.30. They might not have understood the intricacies of tsunami that ravaged coastal India and some island nations in Asia.

But they had sympathy for the sufferings of families victimised by tsunami.

A group of children studying in a school here collected Rs.3,500 from students and presented the purse to the urban district secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), R. Jyothiram, at Tallakulam this evening.

Along with them, a group of children joined the elders, traders and members of the CPI (M) in expressing solidarity in paying homage to all those who lost their lives when the killer waves lashed the coast with fury. The members lit candles in front of a makeshift altar erected on the occasion by the CPI (M) to condole the deaths.

The urban district unit of the CPI (M) observed today as `Black Day' to pay homage to the departed souls. Mr. Jyotiram, presided over the condolence meeting held at Tallakulam.

The party workers hoisted black flags at one thousand places in the city to condole the deaths.

The party had mobilised a little over Rs. one lakh as relief to rehabilitate the tsunami victims in the State. The amount would be presented to the State unit soon to be given away to the affected, said Mr. Jyotiram.

The Madurai East MLA, N. Nanmaran, and district office-bearers, P. Marisamy, R. Annathurai, K. Pazhanivelu, V. Pitchai and E. M. Joseph, were among those who participated.

Foreigner donates

1000 dollars

A United States national, Jerry Jones, who visited the Aravind Eye Hospital here today donated US $ 1000 towards the relief and rehabilitation of tsunami affected families in Tamil Nadu.

Including this, the Madurai district administration has totally received Rs.3,49,094 as contribution from various sections of for the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund today. With this sum, the total amount received by the administration so far accounted for Rs.5,93,394.

This apart, the administration has received Rs.13,56,000 worth essential commodities, clothes, vessels, biscuits, etc. to be despatched to various relief camps in the affected coastal districts in the State.

The Madurai District Rural Development Agency alone has contributed Rs.1,31,000 worth commodities including petromax lanterns, bed sheets, mats, towels, plastic pots, dhotis, sarees, kerosene stoves, etc., according to the Collector, D. Raajendiran.
