TIRUCHI, DEC. 30 . Girl students should shun inhibitions and develop self-confidence to face the challenges ahead of them, the Judge of the Madras High Court, Justice Prabha Sridevan, said. Declaring open an auditorium constructed out of public donations at the Girls Higher Secondary School of the Seva Sangam here, Justice Prabha Sridevan said that girl students normally chose to be submissive, unaware of their capabilities. She also underlined the role of teachers in identifying and nurturing the latent talents of the students. Ms. Justice Prabha Sridevan suggested the school authorities initiated steps for psychological counselling to adolescent girls for improving their career development. She said the Sangam had been rendering a yeomen service by catering to the educational needs of girls, many of them orphans. She also paid rich tributes to the founder of the Sangam, the late Rajammal Ramasundaram, whose long-term vision in the cause of orphan girls had been crucial for the empowerment of women. The District and Sessions Judge, V. Thayarammal, urged the girls present on the occasion to develop positive values like fraternity and discipline. The Corporation Commissioner, Harmander Singh, said efforts taken by institutions in the order of the Seva Sangam, supplemented the Centre and State Government-sponsored schemes for the social and economic welfare of the less privileged. He appealed to industrialists and philanthropists to contribute their mite in the cause of the physically disabled, orphans, destitute women etc. Mr. Singh unveiled the portrait of the late Rajammal Ramasundaram and distributed cash prizes to two school toppers in the SSLC and Plus-Two examination. The headmistress of the school, Parameswari, and psychiatrist V. R. Annadurai, were among those who spoke.
