TIRUCHI, DEC. 30 . People from different walks of life under the banner of the National Integration Movement participated in a silent procession in the city this evening to pay homage to tsunami victims. The procession, which began at Palakkarai, passed via Gandhi Market, Big Bazar Street, N. S. B. Road, Sinthamani Bazaar and culminated in a public meeting near the Anna statue. The State president of the movement, Malaikottai Mayandi, led the procession. At the condolence meeting, the former MLA and leader of the Secular Janata Dal, Y. Venkateswara Deekshidhar, the State general secretary of the Movement, Syed Jafar, the district president of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, C. T. Rajendran, the president of the urban district unit of the Indian Union Muslim League, G. S. A. Mannan, Tiruvenkata Yadav of the Rashtriya Janatha Dal and others spoke. A resolution adopted at the end of the meeting said that the office-bearers of the Movement, who took relief materials to Nagapattinam district, were of the view that the government machinery had not been fully geared for launching rescue and relief operations. It urged the Government to take effective steps without further loss of time to bring succour to the affected families and prevent the incidence of epidemics. A BJP team, led by its State secretrary, T. N. Balaji Sivaraj, visited various parts of Nagapattinam district and undertook rescue and relief operations yesterday. The team members cremated the unclaimed bodies. A release from the urban district unit of the BJP said the people of the interior coastal hamlets were still panic-stricken as no relief measure, especially medical attention, had been extended to them. The party had already pressed into service a team of doctors with adequate paramedical personnel to provide medical care. It urged the Government to install tsunami forecast equipment in all coastal districts. Vegetable vendors of the Srirangam market and traders of the Subramaniapuram market downed shutters today to mourn the tidal wave victims.
