BANGALORE, DEC. 30. New Year revelry takes its toll in terms of road accidents every year. Students of Bangalore University are out to buck that trend. Some have seen their friends becoming victims of drunken driving. The students of the Department of Electronic Media have started going around the city; on Friday they will also be armed with video cameras. They will visit all the popular watering holes frequented by young people, around Mahatma Gandhi Road, Brigade Road and Residency Road and as far as ITPL on Whitefield Road. "We will try to drive home the point that drunken driving endangers their lives and those of others on the road,'' they said. The Bangalore Police Commissioner, S. Mariswamy, and the Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor, M.S. Thimmappa, were present at the launch of the campaign on Wednesday. Mr. Mariswamy said:"Western countries have more stringent punishment for drunken driving, and a person caught driving under the influence may even be deprived of his or her driving licence." The Bangalore Doordarshan Director, K.S. Achuthan, sounded a word of caution that the students may face cynical people during their campaign but that need not discourage them.
