KOCHI, DEC. 30. The Coast Guard responded to this morning's tsunami alert by quickly placing one of its advanced offshore patrol vessels (AOPVs) out at sea, so that it could reach any affected area along the State's coast within minutes after a tsunami attack. The Coast Guard Commander, DIG M.S. Dangi, ordered the 101-metre-long AOPV, CGS Sagar, to sail out into the sea soon after he received the alert on a possible tsunami attack around noon. "We chose to put the vessel out at sea fearing a blockage of the harbour in the event of a tsunami attack," said Mr. Dangi. CGS Sagar, with a helicopter on board, is one of the advanced ships of the Coast Guard. It carries over 90 officers and sailors, apart from a medical team. The ship was called back to the Coast Guard base in the evening after the fears of the tsunami subsided. The Coast Guard had kept its fast patrol boat on the alert following the warning issued by the authorities concerned. The Coast Guard flew two helicopter sorties between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari and between Kayamkulam and Karunagapally today. A Dornier aircraft of the Coast Guard continued its relief operations at the Maldives for the fourth day today. Apart from food and medicine, the aircraft carried personnel of the Maldives Coast Guard from the Maldives to the tiny island of Hanimadu today. Another AOPV of Coast Guard, CGS Samar, will arrive here tomorrow from Mumbai as part of strengthening the search and rescue work of the force.
