Rehabilitation for tsunami victims hastened

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, DEC. 30. The calm sea promised a good catch, but few dared to venture out. This was the situation that prevailed at Chappa Beach, Malippuram, on Thursday following an alert of a tsunami strike during forenoon.

Bose, a fisherman who went out into the sea along with his friend, reported a change in the wind pattern and waves.

"We had just been up to 10 `maars' (one `maar', in local parlance, is a distance covered by outstretched arms) when we noticed the change. So we returned to the shore," he said.

Soon, the official alert came and people made attempts to contact those at sea.

Malippuram Chappa Beach, the first ward in Elankunnapuzha panchayat, has been cut off from the rest of the area. The only road that leads to the beach has remained damaged for a long time.

Master plan sought

The 5-km-long road between Chappa Beach and Puthuvype lighthouse has become vital now to more than 2,000 families.

It is the only road that provides access for the people to the city."We have requested the District Collector to repair this road as part of the rehabilitation work," said C.M. Devassy, president of the Vypeen block panchayat.

The residents of the region complained that no vehicle, except tankers carrying drinking water, reaches the beach. Bus services to the locality have been discontinued. Four persons have died so far without getting timely medical assistance, they added.

The local residents are demanding a master plan for road repair, including the cleaning up of five pipes leading to the Puthuvype estuary. All the pipes are now blocked and water logging has been a constant problem here.

Following the alert, women and children were taken back to the relief camps, while the men stayed back. However, life along the Vypeen-Munambam road remained unaffected.

Help for marriage

The district administration has initiated steps to mobilise funds for the marriage of Prasanna, daughter of Kokkolath Velayudhan and Lakshmi whose house and belongings were washed away by the tsunami. Her marriage to Babu of Thrissur was scheduled to be held on January 2.

"We are trying to raise funds," said Mini Antony, Revenue Divisional Officer. The marriage will be held at the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple as scheduled.

Rehabilitation

The State Government will prepare rehabilitation packages for victims at Edavanakadu and Elakunnapuzha, the worst-hit regions in the district, said M.A. Kuttappan, MLA.

Addressing the media here, Dr. Kuttappan said rehabilitation camps would be set up at 1.18 acres of revenue land (`puramboke') and at Wards 1 and 10 in the Edavanakadu panchayat.

From among 49 houses that were destroyed in the region, those closer to the seawall would be given preference, he said.

Also, 29 houses at the Chappa Beach in Elakunnapuzha will be completed as part of the rehabilitation process, Dr. Kuttappan added.
