THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 30. The people in the capital and the foreign tourists who have thronged the tourist destinations would witness austere New Year celebrations this year. The beach resorts of Kovalam and Varkala are yet to emerge from the Sunday's tsunami shock and the panic created following the alert sounded by the Government today. Almost all the clubs in the capital and the leading hotels in the city and in the beach resorts have already cancelled the New Year celebrations in the wake of the appeal made by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy. Some of the hotels have limited the celebrations to dinner and have decided to donate the proceedings from it to the relief fund set up for those affected by the tidal upsurge. In Kovalam, the tourism authorities have cancelled the celebrations organised every year. There will not be illumination and welcome banners on the beaches this year, according to tourism officials. The Light House, Eve's and Grove beaches will be lit up using 30 halogen lamps as locals residents are expected to arrive in large numbers.
