HYDERABAD, DEC. 31. Swaranjit Sen took over as the Director General of Police from S. R. Sukumara, under rather unusual circumstances here on Friday. Contrary to the traditional system of changeover when both sign papers together, Mr. Sen assumed office and rushed by road to Vijayawada to be in time for the Prime Minister's visit. Earlier, Mr. Sukumara and Mr. Sen reviewed an impressive parade by a contingent of special armed reserve at the Amberpet Central Police Lines to mark the occasion. While leaving for Vijayawada, Mr. Sen carried with him the papers that he had to sign to formalise his takeover but Mr. Sukumara returned to the DGP office and waited for the papers for his countersignature. For technical reasons, Mr. Sen was supposed to sign the papers only in the afternoon.
Technicalities
He did so at 12.05 pm while travelling somewhere between Suryapet and Kodad and returned the papers by another car, which reached the DGP office at 3.30 pm when Mr. Sukumara countersigned and left to call on the Home Minister and Chief Secretary. With these developments, the ceremony of escorting Mr. Sen to his seat by Mr. Sukumara and the farewell by the DGP office staff by towing his car with ropes will have to wait till Saturday. The towing symbolises that the outgoing DGP has carried the force on his shoulders till his retirement and that it is now payback time.
