Pacific-linked tsunami warning system soon, says Kalam

By Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI, DEC. 31. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today said the country will soon have a tsunami warning system linked with the Pacific network. This would help in sharing data and issuing warnings on tidal waves generated due to earthquakes in the sea.

During an interaction with child scientists at the valedictory function of the 12th National Children's Science Congress here, Mr. Kalam also said that London-based industrialist Lord Swraj Paul expressed his desire to take the responsibility of education of 100 children orphaned by the tragedy in India.

The President was responding to a query of Nikhil, a child scientist from Goa whether the country had any system to forecast disasters like tsunami. Mr. Kalam also told the child scientists that if anyone of them could find ways to forecast earthquakes then he or she would become one of the greatest scientists.

Describing the networking of the country's rivers as one of the greatest missions, Mr. Kalam said this would help in management of the country's water resources and overcome floods in surplus basins such as the Brahmaputra and the Ganges and drought in deficit basins in other States.

He also called upon the child scientists to undertakemapping of natural resources in their neighbourhood and identify water bodies to develop an insight about networking of rivers.

Mr. Kalam told the 558 child scientists to nurture a dream, develop a positive attitude and not allow themselves to be defeated by any problem. ``No discovery has been made without problem. The problem should not defeat you. The scientists should defeat the problem,'' he said in his speech delivered prior to the interaction. During the five-day mega event, the child scientists had presented 561 projects on the theme: "Harness water resources for a better future.''

During his more than hour-long interaction with the child scientists Mr. Kalam fielded queries on issues ranging from tsunami to protection of children.
