Newspaper office attacked

ONGOLE: Congress workers attacked the office of a Telugu daily here on Friday in protest against what they called scurrilous reports against their leader, Ongole MLA and DCC president, Balineni Sreenivasa Reddy. The agitators took out procession from the DCC office to the newspaper office holding placards and raising slogans. Some workers tried to barge into the office while some others pelted stones damaging glasspanes of a film distribution office. They burnt the effigy of the reporter.

`Harassed' farmer ends life

ANANTAPUR: Unable to bear the harassment from money lenders, a farmer, G. Rangaiah (51) of Gannevaripalli in Tadipatri rural mandal, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Thursday night. According to the farmer's wife, Krishnaveni, they have nine acres of dry land and have been suffering crop failure for the last few years. They have piled up a debt of Rs. 3 lakhs due to continuous borrowing for agriculture and other family needs. She said they had approached helpline earlier this year complaining harassment by the lenders. But no help had come their way.

Court names vacation judges

HYDERABAD: Justice A. Gopal Reddy and K.C. Bhanu of the High Court will hear matters of urgent nature during its Sankranti vacation from January 3 to 12. The court will sit at 10.30 a.m. from January 5 and 11. D. Suryanarayana Murthy, Deputy Registrar, N. Macheswara Rao, and P.N.Ratnam, Assistant Registrars, will be Vacation Officers. According to a notification issued by the Registrar-General of the court, except appeals under Section 383 of Criminal Procedure Code from appellants who are in jail, no application other than of urgent nature, will be received during the vacation. Notice of any application of urgent nature will be given to vacation officers before 1.30 p.m. on the preceding day of the court's working days of January 4 and 10.

`Steps initiated to save RTC'

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that steps are being taken to protect the APSRTC and save it from the financial crisis. He was responding to a representation submitted by leaders of the APSRTC National Mazdoor Union here on Thursday. Dr. Reddy assured them that steps were being taken to allow the union to be involved in the reforms committee set up recently. Its advice would be sought to ensure better service conditions.

Madras Telugu Academy award

VISAKHAPATNAM: A. Ramalinga Sastry, who writes for The Hindu on cultural events,

and his wife, A. Sunanda Sastry (light music exponent), have been chosen for the Samaikya Bharath Gaurav Satkar-2005 of the Madras Telugu Academy (MTA) in its silver jubilee year for their achievements as `made for each other' couple in journalism and music. The award will be presented to them at MTA's Ugadi function in Chennai on April 3, according to its founder-chief convener, T.V.K. Shastry.

State projects for global fair

HYDERABAD: Two of the 10 projects selected to participate in the International Science Talent Discovery Fair to be held in May next are from the State. The projects have been designed by C.P. Varun (15), SFS School, Sitammadhara, Visakhapatnam (`tidal pump') and G. Akhila (13), DAV Public School, Neredmet, Hyderabad (`low-cost fluoride analyser'). According to S.N. Jadhav, Additional Secretary and Member-Secretary, Andhra Pradesh State Council of Science and Technology, the two projects were displayed at the 12th National Children Science Congress held at Guwahati from December 27 to 31.

Shinde, YSR, Naidu greet people

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Friday greeted people of the State on the occasion of New Year. In a message, the Governor called upon people to chart out future in the light of a fast changing world.

The Chief Minister, in his greetings to people, said Telugus had a history of laying the path to a fruitful future with ability to face difficulties, obstacles and natural calamities boldly and with confidence. Mr. Naidu, who decided not to celebrate the New Year in view of the tsunami tragedy, wanted party leaders and cadre to avoid coming to his residence or party office to greet him.

BJP incharges for three districts

HYDERABAD: N. Indrasena Reddy, State BJP president, on Friday appointed M.P. Vema, former MLA, K. Saida Reddy and B. Manohar Reddy as incharges of West Godavari, Nellore and Khammam district units respectively, according to a statement issued here by K. Lakshman, general secretary. While Mr. Saida Reddy is a special invitee to the State Executive, Dr. Manohar Reddy is a member of the executive committee.

Vacation for consumer panel

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission will have vacations for Sankranti, summer and Dasara. However, its office will function from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all working days during the vacation.The vacations are from January 3 to 12 (Sankranti), May 2 to June 3 (summer) and October 10 to 14 (Dasara).

Antique silver coins found

VIJAYAWADA: Silver coins and gold ornaments dating back to 1845-1848 AD were found on a private land at Gampalgudem village of Krishna district on Friday morning. According to the SI of Gampalgudem Police Station, M. Ramamohan Rao, labourers hired by the landowner, Nagender Rao, were digging up the earth for some construction work when they stumbled upon a copper pot.

The pot contained 39 silver coins with inscription marks belonging to the said period. Besides, the coins a gold bangle with the images of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi and a golden locket were also found. On receipt of news, the local MRO, S. Jogeswara Rao, visited the place and took possession of the artefacts.

Illegal stamp papers burnt

VIZIANAGARAM: The District Treasury and the Sub-Registrar Office here on Friday burnt illegal stamp papers of denomination Rs.500 and above totalling Rs.7,16,06,000 (Treasury-Rs.5.02 crores and Sub-Registrar Rs.2,14,06,000) at the Collectorate and also at the Sub-Registrar's office in the presence of the incharge Collector, K. Siddhartha Goutham, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, T. Bhaskara Rao, the District Treasury Officer, Parvathamma and the district Registrar, A. Nagalakshmi.

CRS Day tomorrow

TIRUPATI: The South Central Railway has announced that `CRS Day', the annual day of its Carriage Repair Shop (CRS), will be celebrated on January 2, 2005.

An exhibition cricket match, `rangoli', musical chair, fancy dress contest and other cultural programmes will mark the occasion.

Rally taken out

TIRUPATI: Members of the Mahajana Rights Protection Samithi (MRPS) took out a rally on Thursday, demanding, among other things, restoration of patta, waste and poramboke lands under irrigation tanks, which were allegedly encroached. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Revenue Divisional Officer, listing their demands.

Nominated

KURNOOL: G. Samuel, B. Gorantlappa, T. Madduleti and K. Satyanarayana Gupta were nominated to the State Committee of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists from Kurnool district, according to a press release.

Tobacco barn gutted

NELLORE: A tobacco barn was gutted in Chandrapadiya village of Vinjamoor mandal on Thursday. The fire broke out at the time of curing, it was said.

25 held in excise raids

CUDDAPAH: Excise and Prohibition officials arrested 25 persons on the charge of brewing illicitly distilled arrack in a fortnight-long drive.

Sixteen were arrested in Rayachoti and Lakkireddipalle areas and nine in Pulivendula and Proddatur areas in the drive, the Excise Superintendent, L.C. Muralidhar, said in a statement on Friday. In the two areas, 374 litres of arrack and a bicycle were seized and 19,520 litres of jaggery wash destroyed.

Selected for award

TIRUPATI: D.M. Mamatha, assistant professor of Sericulture at Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV), has been selected for the `Talented scientist' award at the UGC national seminar on `Recent advances in animal physiology' conducted at SV University recently for her paper, `Molecular visualisation and functional physiology of JH in insects with reference to Bombyx mori L', presented on the occasion.

`Tirupati Guide'

TIRUPATI: The TUDA Chairman, B. Karunakar Reddy, has released the `Tirupati Guide' Yellow Pages at a brief function.

The guide even provides consumers comparative prices of various products available in the market. The 2005 edition is available in Buy `N' Save (KT Road), Manikanta Supermarket (Giripuram), Sabson Junction (KT Road), Khadi Gramodyog Mandir (Gandhi Road) and Excel Stationeries (Prakasam Road).

Free health camp

NIZAMABAD: The Central Bank of India Employees' Association and the Indian Medical Association will jointly organise a free major rural/tribal health camp at Malkapur village in Nizamabad mandal on January 2.

The Minister for Rural Development, D. Srinivas, will be the chief guest and the bank's Deputy General Manager, K.A. Somayajulu, and the Regional Manager, V. Venkat Sai, will be guests of honour. According to project coordinator, R. Vidya Sagar, a group of 17 specialist doctors will offer their services at the camp.

Religious programme

NIZAMABAD: Sri Satsang Seva Samithi, Indur, will celebrate the rendition of Divya Sri Rama Katha at Sakethdham, Shradhaganj, from January 2 to 10.

Sri Ramesh Bhaiji Oja (Bhai Sri) of Gujarat will recite the katha. Recital of devotional songs, presentation of various dresses depicting different cultures and traditions of the country and bhajans will mark the programme.

On the inaugural day, a massive rally called `kalash yatra'' will be taken out from Sai Baba temple at Madhavnagar.

Publicity campaign

ADILABAD: A six-day multimedia publicity campaign to be organised jointly by the Directorate of Field Publicity and the District Women and Child Development Agency (DWCDA) will be inaugurated at the MPDO office at Nirmal on January 6, 2005, according to a press release.

Office-bearers elected

ADILABAD: K. Manmohan Reddy and Syed Moinuddin were elected president and general secretary respectively of the Adilabad Bar Association on Friday.

According to a press release, K. Ajay Kumar and A. Nagesh were elected vice-president and joint secretary respectively, P. Rajeshwar treasurer, T. Devender Singh sports secretary and A. Santosh Kumar library secretary.

ITDA grant

WARANGAL: The Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Eturunagaram, has sanctioned a one-time grant of Rs. 2 lakhs to Kakatiya University for setting up a ST Book Bank on the campus.

DRDA's call

WARANGAL: The Project Director, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Ch. Sridhar, has exhorted women to make use of welfare schemes being offered by the Government.

Participating in the 10th anniversary of Rudrama Women's Welfare Society (RWSS) here, Mr. Sridhar said that women should supplement the efforts of the Government in improving the living standards. The RWSS founder-president, G. Subhashini, spoke.
