ALAPPUZHA, DEC. 31. Seventy-eight-year-old Chellama of Valiyazheekkal, staying at the relief camp at Muthukulam Higher Secondary School, is hopeful after the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, gave the assurance that the Government would do everything possible to rehabilitate her. But Chellamma, who lost her eldest daughter, Santha (55) in the tsunami attack, is worried that she could not tell her difficulties completely to the Prime Minister, who visited the relief camp today. Just when she told him about the death of Santha who was the only earning member of the family, others pushed her back and he walked forward. She could not catch up with him however she tried. After a brief chat with the people, he walked away. Chellamma doubts whether the promises would be fulfilled. After all, she had heard politicians making promises during elections. Her doubts were shared by many others. They doubt whether the State authorities who took the Prime Minister to the relief camps at Muthukulam and Pullukulamgara in the district had been able to convince him about the gravity of the situation. It is pointed out that the Prime Minister did not announce any specific package and he had given them assurances of a general nature only. Many of those assembled there were people from other areas who came to see the Prime Minister. Some feel that the Prime Minister would have been more convinced about their plight had he visited Arattupuzha which was devastated by the seismic waves. But, in spite of their doubts, they are hopeful. Mr. Manmohan Singh by his simple manners has gained their confidence. They think he is different from ordinary politicians who promise and then forget.
