NEW DELHI, DEC. 31. A day after the Science and Technology Minister, Kapil Sibal, publicly disagreed with a Home Ministry alert on the possibility of a fresh tidal wave striking coastal States, the Congress president and United Progressive Alliance chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, today chided Mr. Sibal. Mr. Sibal, who met Ms. Gandhi today, was told that there should be coordination between the Ministers, according to highly-placed party sources. The Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, had a word with Ms. Gandhi over telephone last night, the sources added. The BJP criticised the manner in which the tidal wave alert issue was handled and said the "goof-up" showed that the UPA Government lacked coordination. On the other hand, the Congress sought to downplay the incident. The party spokesperson, Abhishek Singhvi, said the alert was a "bona fide error" and accused the BJP of "politicising" the issue." "He [Mr. Sibal] was describing [as hogwash] the information [on a fresh tsunami strike],'' Mr. Singhvi said. He was asked about the party view on public disagreement by a junior Minister with a senior Minister.
