NALGONDA, DEC. 31. Extending free power for corporate agriculturalists and businessmen, who supply water for construction of houses in urban areas, and the rich, who take up cultivation to get income tax exemption, is a meaningless exercise, the State secretary of the Communist Party of India, S. Sudhakar Reddy, has said. ``Our stand has been clear that free power should be given for the target groups that include poor farmers and farmers who do not have irrigation facility,'' Mr. Sudhakar Reddy told reporters on Friday. He released a poster of the party's 22nd State conference to be held in the town from February 5 to 9 and reviewed arrangements at the reception committee meeting. Asked whether he suspected the Government's sincerity vis-à-vis free power issue, Mr. Sudhakar Reddy said that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at the all-party meeting, had made it clear that the Government would not go back on it promise. He said that he had posted 28 questions, including the one on fluorosis problem, during the Parliament session. "I hope the Rural Development Ministry has taken note of the problem,'' he added. He demanded that the Government keep its promise by taking initiative to supply water through tunnel instead of lift project.
