UDUPI, DEC. 31. The padayatra by the political leaders of Udupi district under the leadership of the Union Minister of State for Programme Implementation and Statistics, Oscar Fernandes, to seek funds for the tsunami ravaged States helped them collect Rs. 11 lakhs here on Friday. According to the Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has promised to contribute Rs. 1 crore to the fund. The padayatra began from the Sri Krishna Temple premises in the city with Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Admar Mutt giving a cheque of Rs. 2.34 lakhs for the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The swamiji sympathised with the persons who had lost their near and dear ones in the tsunami ravaged States. The padayatra then went through Tenkapet, Old Post Office Road, Diana Circle, K.M. Marg, Service Bus Stand, City Bus Stand, Mosque Road, Maruthi Vethika before culminating at the Taluk Office. The MP, Manorama Madhwaraj, the MLCs, V.S. Acharya and Pratapchandra Shetty, the MLAs, K. Raghupati Bhat and Lalaji Mendan, the President of Zilla Panchayat, U. Vanajakshi, the President of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Nityananda Shetty, the Chairman of Udupi Urban Development Authority, Alevoor Nagaraj, the Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, the Superintendent of Police, S. Murugan, and political leaders participated in the padayatra. Later, the cash, cheques and demand drafts collected during the padayatra were counted at the taluk office under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner and bank officials. Talking to the presspersons, Mr. Sham Bhatt said Rs. 11,00,126 was collected during the padayatra. Among the main contributors are businessman G. Shankar (Rs. 5 lakhs), the President of the Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, Pramod Madhwaraj (Rs. 1 lakh), and the Hotel Owners Association and the Mangalore Cashew Manufacturers Association (Rs. 1 lakh each). The cheques and demand drafts will be sent to either the Prime Minister's Relief Fund or the Chief Minister's Relief Fund as desired by the donors. Receipts will be given to all the cheque and demand draft transactions and for the cash contributions, Mr. Bhatt has said.
