CHENNAI, DEC. 31. In the days following the tsunami, psychiatrists have pointed out the importance of providing counselling for the survivors of the tragedy, even as the initial rescue efforts are being phased out now. While counsellors and social work students have formed teams and rushed to the affected areas, a coordinated effort at psychiatric rehabilitation is yet to be established. The Director-General of Health Service of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has promised that qualified teams of mental health professionals from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences have been put on call and will soon make trips to the affected areas.
Call to media
The chairman of Apollo Hospitals, Pratap C. Reddy, whose teams have branched out into the various districts to provide medical relief also suggested that the media cease telecasting violent images of distress in the affected villages. Instead, they should concentrate on highlighting positive reconstruction work, which will wean people away from their sorrow and depression. To provide a scientific basis and method to a lot of ad hoc and lay counselling that is going on now for the disaster survivors, the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) will start a three-hour "Counselling for Crisis and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder)" training programme from January 3.
Free programme
This programme, to be organised free of cost, will expose the participants to basic principles of counselling during crisis, dealing with survivors, tips for workers in disaster areas. Both professional and lay counsellors can register for this programme. The venue and timing are currently flexible, according to R. Thara of SCARF. Those interested can call SCARF at 26153971/ 26151073 or through e-mail: scarf@vsnl.com.
