A good year for Vizag police

VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC. 31. The City Police Commissioner, B. Prasad Rao, expressed satisfaction over the results achieved during 2004 by the city police and emphasised on the peaceful conduct of the last elections.

"We took the elections as a challenge as many VVIPs visited the city for campaign. It was a good exposure for officers dealing with these situations,'' he said here on Friday.

The law and order as well as the traffic wing achieved good results. While the incidence of crime had come down considerably, the rate of recovery of stolen property and crime detection improved to 55 per cent. Mr. Rao said they concentrated mainly on crime prevention, which was by itself a difficult task considering the large numbers of tourists visiting the city. "Keeping a tab on them is difficult, but we are doing it," he said. On white-collar crimes like running unauthorised chits, default by financial companies and software firms, Mr. Rao said that discretion should be used while dealing with them. However, the police could be approached in case the dealings and functioning of these companies seemed suspicious.

Maoist outfits

He also added that the Radical Students Union (RSU) and other frontal organisations not facing the ban presently were active to an extent. The RSU appeared to be reviving its activities and its movements were being noticed on the Andhra University campus and other educational institutions. "Some teachers are actively participating in the frontal organisations' activities. They can do so since the organisations are not facing a ban now. But they should use discretion," the CP said.

Mishaps come down

The number of fatalities had come down in spite of increase in the number of vehicles, the Commissioner said..
