BELLARY, JAN. 1. The Tungabhadra Grameena Bank tops the list of banks in the State in the construction godowns, according to its outgoing Chairman, P.N. Murthy. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Murthy said the bank had constructed 325 godowns with a capacity to store 40,000 tonnes in Bellary, Raichur and Koppal districts, and Harpanahalli taluk in Davanagere district.
New chairman
Mr. Murthy has been repatriated to Canara Bank, which sponsors grameena bank. J. Vincent D' Silva will be the new Chairman of the bank.
Self-help groups
The grameena bank has bagged the award for the formation of self-help groups for four years consecutively, Mr. Murthy said. As in March 2004, the number of such groups formed under the guidance of the bank stood at 12,775 and the savings mobilised amounted to Rs. 5.76 crores from 1,53,482 members, he said.
Outlay
Of the self-help groups, 6,735 are credit linked with banks with a credit outlay of Rs. 16.42 crores helping 80,821 members to take up dairy farming, petty business and to set up cottage industries, Mr. Murthy said.
Achievements
Highlighting the achievements of the bank during his tenure, Mr. Murthy said the bank had introduced Sampurna Kissan Credit Card for farmers. Seven villages had been covered under the programme. Mr. Murthy said that the bank had issued 63,886 cards with loans amounting to Rs. 217.43 crores.
Modern farming
In view of the drought in the past three years, the bank had rescheduled loans amounting to Rs. 120 crores taken by farmers. Apart from the initiative to create additional irrigation potential, the bank, in association with the agricultural university, had created awareness among farmers on modern farming methods and the importance of horticulture.
Credit card
He said the bank has come out with Swarojgar Credit Card to help unemployed artisans and youths. So far, 1,076 cards have been issued with which the beneficiaries can avail themselves of loans up to Rs. 25,000, he said.
