Books on three parliamentarians released

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JAN. 1. The Library Committee of the State Legislature has brought out three books, Kagodu Chaluvali, Sri S. Shivappa and Prof. M.P.L. Shastry, under its book publication project, "Life and works of talented parliamentarians". They were released here on Saturday.

Objectives

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, recalled the objectives of the Kagodu agitation. The agitation and the political contribution of the late Shantaveri Gopala Gowda are significant in the history of the Legislature, he said.

Role

The Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil, spoke on the role of the late educationist, Prof. Shastry, who served the Legislature for 25 years, in bringing in drastic changes in the education scenario in the State.

More information

The book should have provided more information on Prof. Shastry's life and his commitment to the cause of education, he said.

He said the committee should bring out more such books to mark the 50 years of the Legislature.

Speaking on Sri S. Shivappa, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Krishna, spoke about the politics practised by Shivappa as the Opposition Leader and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

The former Minister, Kagodu Thimmappa, who spoke on Kagodu Chalavali, said it was difficult in those days to organise people to fight against injustice to the poor meted out by landlords.

But Gopala Gowda mobilised the people to participate in the agitation despite many hurdles, he added.

The Chairman of the Library Sub-Committee in the Legislature, Vishwanath Patil Hebbal, welcomed the gathering.

The Chairperson of the Legislative Council, V.R. Sudarshan, presided over the function.
