MADIKERI, DEC. 1. The Janata Dal (Secular) President and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, said here on Saturday that he expected the Ministers from his party in the coalition Government to perform to the expected levels. If not, the party will take a serious view of it. Addressing party workers here, Mr. Gowda said that he could not say the same about the performance of Congress' Ministers. He said that there was no threat to the Dharam Singh-led Government. Mr. Gowda was here along with other leaders for an enrolment drive of party members. The drive will be completed by January 31.
Election promises
Mr. Gowda said that the Janata Dal (S) was not in a position to implement all election promises, as it is part of the coalition Government. The people of the State did not give the party adequate strength, he said. He said that by aligning with the Congress, the Janata Dal (S) tried to fulfil secular ideals.
Datta Peetha issue
Mr. Gowda said that his party was instrumental in checking the Sangh Parivar from performing puja at the Datta Peetha in Chikmagalur this time. The Congress, which was in power, had allowed it last year. The fact that the coalition Government issued orders to provide loans to farmers at six per cent interest spoke of the commitment of the Janata Dal (S), he said.
Coffee crisis
Later, addressing a press conference, Mr. Gowda expressed his helplessness over the coffee crisis, saying that all that he can do is to highlight the issue in Parliament. His party does not have the sufficient numbers to argue the case in Parliament. "The Government in power should take a decision," he said.
