BELGAUM, JAN. 1. The ambiguity over the establishment of a government medical college here has been cleared with the State Government furnishing "Essentiality and Feasibility Certificate" to the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Dept. of Health recently. The Office of the Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka, has furnished the certificate to the Centre under Regulation 3 of the Medical Council of India Establishment of Medical Colleges Regulation 1999. In support of its proposal to start a medical college in Belgaum, along with five other colleges in the State from the next academic year, the Government has said that Belgaum is one of the biggest districts in the State. The district has only one private medical college (K.L.E. Society's J.N. Medical College) in Belgaum city. Until recently, the J.N. Medical College was utilising the District Hospital (treated as teaching hospital) in the city for clinical facilities. It is, therefore, feasible to start a medical college by the Government, which could utilise the existing infrastructural facilities available at the hospital. Also, there was only one medical college (Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences) in Hubli, running as an autonomous institute, for the entire North Karnataka region. Establishment of a government medical college will cater to the multi-speciality medical needs of the local people.
