Gogoi announces package of schemes

GUWAHATI, JAN. 1. The Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, today announced an insurance scheme for all bona fide residents of the State.

Unveiling a package of schemes as New Year gift to the people, Mr. Gogoi also announced that the retirement age of all State Government employees would be increased from 58 to 59 years with immediate effect.

On the insurance scheme, Mr. Gogoi told reporters that those who have their names on the electoral rolls and their dependents could claim medical benefits to the tune of Rs. 25000. In case of death caused by accident or any disease, the next of kin of the deceased could claim Rs. 50,000. In case of any accident causing injury, Rs. 25,000 could be claimed.

Mr. Gogoi said the State Government would be required to pay an estimated premium of Rs. 20 crores annually against the insurance coverage. The terms and conditions of the insurance scheme would be worked out in detail later.

Increase in wages

The Chief Minister announced an increase in the monthly wages of casual workers from the present Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 2,100. The package

Mr. Gogoi's package includes opening up of information technology departments in 50 of the 192 colleges of the State and a library grant to the tune of Rs. 10 crore for purchasing books. The Government also planned to provide credit linkage to three lakh youths for self-employment.

Mindset change

Mr. Gogoi described the change in the mindset of people towards development as the biggest achievement of his Government in the past one year.

Donation

Mr. Gogoi said the Government would contribute Rs. 2 crores towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for the tsunami-affected people. Earlier, he had contributed Rs. 25 lakhs from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the PM's Relief fund.
