Science meet to focus on health sector

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD, JAN. 1. The 92nd Indian Science Congress will be held here this year at the Nirma Institute of Science and Technology, from January 3 to 5.

As per convention, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, will inaugurate the Congress on Monday while the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, will interact with scientists and other delegates in the Congress on January 5. The Union Minister for Science and Technology, Kapil Sibal, will chair some of the plenary sessions. The last time the science congress was in Gujarat was in Vadodara in 1992 hosted by the Maharaja Sayajirao University.

The theme of this year's Congress is "Health technology as the fulcrum of development for the nation.'' Dr. N. K. Ganguly, director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research and general president of the 92nd science congress, said it was the first time in 92 years that the health sector was chosen as the central theme in the ISC. "It is because of the growing awareness that a sound health system can contribute a lot in the nation's development.''

With about 6,000 delegates, including 400 foreign delegates expected to attend the meet, the ISC will provide an opportunity to scientists and technocrats to highlight the achievements of India and other nations in health technology to benefit other developing countries.

"It will also be a step to increase interaction between industry and the scientists,'' the vice-chancellor of Nirma university and chief patron of the science congress, N. V. Vasani, said.

Around 400 students of science selected from various schools in the city and other parts of the State will hold a "parallel" congress at the Science City complex to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi.
