Valley cut off
SRINAGAR,
JAN. 1.
Heavy snowfall led to the closure of the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, cutting off the Kashmir valley from the rest of the country.
Srinagar and its adjoining areas experienced heavy snowfall early this morning.
Trees, electric poles, roof tops and roads turned white and a number of roads were flooded with water as the snow started melting after the sun appeared, disrupting normal life here.The snowfall, accompanied by cold winds, forced people to remain indoors.
A report from Charar-e-Sharief said about one and a half feet of snowfall was recorded since last evening.
However, the snowfall came as a bonus to tourists who had come to the skiing resort of Gulmarg to celebrate the New Year.
