GULBARGA, JAN. 1. A.V. Nawade, Dean of the Language Faculty of Kannada University, Hampi, on Saturday, decried what he described as a tendency among professionals and educationists to use mostly English in medical and technical education. There is an urgent need to popularise Kannada in this respect, he added. Inaugurating a seminar on healthy lifestyle organised by Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishthan as part of its fifth anniversary, Prof. Nawade said Kannada books on technical and medical subjects are not being updated. While giving importance to English in education, particularly with regard to professional courses, Kannada should not be ignored. He said a welcome change is that many books in Kannada on professional education, particularly those related to medical courses, have come out.
Appreciated
Prof. Nawade, who released the book Ellallu Kanuva Kayilegalu by D.K. Mahabalaraju, appreciated the initiatives of the pratishthan in publishing such books on medicine and health-related subjects in Kannada. He commended Dr. Shankar, Medical Director of Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College here, for writing books on health issues in Kannada. Dr. Shankar has to his credit over 100 books in Kannada, besides many times that number in English. Prof. Nawade said spirituality and joint family earlier helped people lead a healthy life. Unfortunately, disintegration of the joint family system has led to degeneration of values and falling health standards. Spirituality plays a crucial role in maintaining mental health, which helps prevent many diseases. People should give more care to prevention of diseases. He said books in Kannada on health, such as that written by Dr. Mahabalaraju, is in simple language and offer tips to prevent many common diseases.
